About the Therapist

Tess Liebersohn, LPC

Hello! I’m Tess (she/her) and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor offering individual psychotherapy (telehealth) for adults in Pennsylvania.

I became a therapist for many reasons. At my core, I enjoy being with people as they encounter the inherent tensions of life. I work with clients who are ready to understand more about the who, why, and what of their lives, challenges and all.

As a therapist, I want to make the task of being human a little bit easier. Through presence, dialogue, and compassion, I help people step more fully into their own lives.

Qualifications

  • Master’s of Education in Professional Counseling, University of Pennsylvania (2018)

  • Postgraduate Certificate, Gestalt Therapy Institute of Philadelphia (2023)

  • Bachelor of Arts, University of Pittsburgh

I stay current through personal therapy, peer supervision, and continuing education according to state board guidelines.

A little more about me

My Approach

I am influenced by Gestalt Therapy, Nonviolent Communication, ecotherapy, self-directed education, and my own experiences and training. Each of these approaches informs an eclectic framework that I tailor to whatever emerges in session.  I believe every person is oriented towards growth and self-development, regardless of where they are when they come into the therapy room.

I see clients with a variety of issues: grief, depression, anxiety, adjusting to life changes, high sensitivity, boundaries, trauma, burnout, and more.  A frequent question I ask, regardless of the presenting issue, is: “As you tell me this, what do you notice is happening right now?” This leads us to the here and now, where we find validation, relief, wonder, the past, present, future, and everything that makes up a vibrant life.  The here and now is where acceptance, change, and healing begin.  It’s where my clients discover new ways to face old patterns.

My style has been described as direct, playful, and creative. Depending on the session, I may be:

  • a witness to your experience;

  • a collaborator in problem-solving;

  • an observer of an entrenched situation who offers new perspectives; and/or

  • a coach who guides you through new stories and possibilities.

Always, I pay attention to your experience and needs, as well as the flow and timing of the session.

Beyond being a therapist, I’m an educator, reader, storyteller, and hybrid city/country mouse from Philadelphia. I am a white, Jewish woman, along with other labels that make up my multitudes. Before becoming a therapist, I worked at summer camps, wrote for the government, and taught English abroad. I’ve also been a performer and a hiker. I live in Philadelphia. I am licensed to work with anyone in Pennsylvania.

There’s only so much you can get from a website.
